Abstract

       With this project I wanted to execute a time lapse but give it an extra push and add tones and colors to the animation using a very sketchy style to make it the black and white time lapse more playful. I want to use the principles I learned in rotoscoping as well as incorporating digital painting.

Research

       For this project I enlisted the help of Photoshop, and used it as my primary program. I encountered a few issues at first with it because I was using an older version of the program and the animation options weren't readily available. I had to do a lot of research online on how to achieve animated results with the version I was using. After that, I was still relatively new to animating in Photoshop, so I kind of felt my way around the program and experimented with the order of the different layers and effects that I could add to individual frames. As for the aesthetics of my project, I was really influenced at first by different time lapse videos and their particular beauty of showing time passing and showcasing seemingly mundane subjects. As my ideas for my project changed and I decided to add digital painting, I was really influenced by a 'loose' and sketchy animation style, which adds a lot of motion of playfulness to the video. I wanted to incorporate both  of these things.

      First I took separate time lapses of my friends walking to, and from lunch, seen here.

        As for my process, as seen in my previous blog post (1st Iteration of Final Project), and above, I was mostly experimenting with how my time lapse would look in gif format at different frame speeds and using different colors. After that I chose to narrow down the number of frames in order to make it more workable, and then  select the colors in the image and in a new, accompanying layer, paint the bits of the image that I wanted in color and then overlay it on top of the black and white original image. Since I was starting to get the feel of a silent movie, I added 3 title frames throughout and gave them a silent movie graphic treatment while still sticking with the playful sketchy feeling throughout the rest of the frames. I encountered some difficulties trying to transfer the file into video format (seen below), as the different qualities of both the painted layer, and the actual black and white frames wouldn't match up.

Because of this, I've stuck to displaying it as a gif.

Self-Evaluation

        I'm pretty content with how this project turned out. I didn't expect it to all tie together as much, since for most of the project I was focused on individual slides and was worried that it wouldn't be cohesive, but it does end up being that. I like how playful it is, which is what I was definitely going for. I enjoyed working with animation more than I anticipated. It definitely has a lot of possibilities, which is great as an artist. In the future I would like to add more color and maybe see what it would look like if it was neater---if it would still have the same effect or not. Overall, I'm very happy with it.

1st Iteration of Final Project

Project 6: 4.23.13

Rotoscoping!! This was created in Photoshop using a frame to frame process and tracing over the outline of a video.

Project 5: 4.9.13

Drawing using Adobe Illustrator. I wanted to make a piece that had a cool, graffiti feel to it. I used the
pen tool to create interesting shapes and then filled and cloned them with different colors. I also used the brush tool to add little splatters as well as using the blob brush tool to create the messy shapes in the background.

Project 4: 2.26.13

For this project I had to color correct 3 images using Photoshop and non-destructive edits. This was achieved by using filters, changing the brightness/contrast, and adjusting the brightness and color levels in the image.

In this image I auto corrected the contrast, then lowered the lightness and added some saturation to the image. Then I added a violet filter with 26% density. I did this in order to achieve and intense but harmonious looks between all the colors in the image.

In this image I lowered the contrast and increased the brightness manually. Then I brightened up some of the trees in the background using the curves tool. Using the color balance I increased the blues, magentas, and cyans in the midtones.

In this image I auto corrected the contrast, then made the shadows in the image look darker and more striking by changing the presets in the curves tool in Photoshop. Then I added a warming filter with a density of 30% in order to give the image a certain atmosphere and make the image look more cohesive.

Quaterly Portofolio Pieces

   This image is more abstract and moody, thanks to some changes I made with the hue and contrast. I find the perspective in this image very interesting and the lines of the staircase add a very linear movement to the image. The different highlights- on the floor and around the edges of the stairs add a bit of random but interesting and playful movement to an otherwise very serious image.

          For this composition I used two images to create a more coherent and harmonious composition. the picture of the NYC Postal Office with the cabs in the foreground, and a sunset. I wanted to go for a really subtle image, where it doesn't seem too obvious what the manipulation is. The warm orange colors add warmth to the image, which is really pleasing, and the intense hue that builds up in the left corner leads your eye to that corner, and the bright orange cabs lead your eye back to the foreground.

       
             In this image I used a picture of a brick wall outside of Holman Hall, and a graffiti cartoon man that was found on the a different wall also outside of Holman. I tried to make it as if the cartoon man was originally a part of the wall. I used different techniques such a s distorting, blurring, and warping the layer in order to create a seemless combination of two images.

Project 3: 2.11.13

For this project I had to choose an image and create both an internal, and external outline for it. This was to create a good composition with points of interest. The images could be altered in order to fulfill these requirements.

The above image is my original image, and the bottom is the altered image so that it could work with the external outline with a rule of thirds grid. I cropped the image and as well as moving the building on the right closer to the middle.

The above is my original image, and below I manipulated it by changing the position of the boat and by adding a seagull. These changes were added as I worked on the internal outline and as I figured out where the lines in the image led me.

Project 2: 2.5.13

For this composition I used two images- the picture of the NYC Postal Office with the cabs in the foreground, and a sunset. I wanted to go for a really subtle image, where it doesn't seem too obvious what the manipulation is.

In this image I used a picture of a brick wall outside of Holman Hall, and a graffiti cartoon man that was found on the a different wall also outside of Holman.

 

For this image I had to use pictures used in the last project. I chose the digital painting of a figure texting,  and the picture I took of two people walking. While going through my pictures I noticed that in this image the guy walking is checking his phone, so I decided it would be interesting to add a 'ghost'image of the person he is texting or talking to, also texting back.

Self Portrait Drawing.
For this image I used different settings of the brush tool as well as changes in opacity to
create a painterly effect while digitally painting my face.

Abstract Portrait.
I loved finding this graffiti-ed portrait of a girl out on the street beside a phone box.
It really represents a specific image and situation and the colors and really vibrant and interesting.

Extra Portrait.
This portrait is kind of a tongue in cheek reference to Rene Magritte's paintings.

Representational Portrait. This image captures two different representations of a face.

Idea/Action Drawing (Texting)
I digitally painted this image and wanted to make it kind of
symbolic and not to make it too straightforward by also including the text blurb shapes.

Idea.
Found outside of Holman Hall.

Representational Action (Walking)
Kind of self explanatory. I edited the image slightly in Photoshop, changing the
 contrast and levels, as well as the tones to make it more clear.

Abstract Action (Climbing Stairs)
I altered this image a lot using Photoshop. I converted it to black and white
and then adjusted the curves and contrast in order to bring out strong dark tones
without losing the motion and sort of playfulness in the image. 

Environment Drawing
This is an image in which I employed digital painting. I painted a pathway in
Princeton, NJ.

Representational Environnent
Image taken in Barcelona in Parc Gaudi, and I think it really represents an
environment well, with the towering marble and distinct vanishing point.

Extra Environment
This photo also depicts an environment with  a strong vanishing point.

Abstract Environment
I love the different textures and shades all throughout the image, and the motion
in the composition that helps your eye move throughout and into the photograph.
